Could Weight Loss Surgery Beat Diabetes?

At Dr. Feiz & Associates, we're proud to be home to a truly first-rate weight loss surgery team. Dr. Michael Feiz and his staff are dedicated to providing state-of-the-art treatment for those struggling with obesity because we know that obesity and excess weight can have a truly negative effect on one's life. However, perhaps even more importantly, after several years of performing weight loss surgery in California, we understand that bariatric treatments like Lap Band and gastric sleeve can go a long way towards reducing the effects of hypertension, sleep apnea, cardiovascular disease, arthritis, and even diabetes.

A recent article in Reuters discussed findings from a study that collected more than 20 years of evidence to find that bariatric surgery produces greater weight loss and more instances of type 2 diabetes remission than nonsurgical medical treatment. In fact, studies show that bariatric surgery might be the best option for reversing type 2 diabetes for individuals with a BMI as low as 30.

We're proud to see that the weight loss surgeries performed by Dr. Feiz are achieving better results each year. "In general, what we have learned in the last five years is it is very safe and extraordinarily effective when you compare it to nonsurgical options like diet and behavioral therapy," says Dr. Justin B Dimick, chief of minimally invasive surgery at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
